Down and Out United was the challenge I wanted!
Even the weather was against me as I walked into the Cowdenbeath ground on that wet blustery morning in 1925 to start as manager. Here, I thought, is the arena where Adam Scott Duncan gets thrown to the lions or receives the plaudits because, make no mistakes, there are none as so fickle as soccer supporters.
As I waited to meet the chairman, I kept repeating that well-known cliche : “nothing succeeds like success”. How right it has proved for me. The club was in trouble all the way round.
